Climategate - tidernas vetenskapsskandal? #2

Nu ska vi titta lite närmare på vad som avslöjats i breven. I ett brev sänt till Michael Mann Hockeyklubbans fader skriver Jones att han hellre raderar alla temperaturdata i sin server än lämnar ut dem till McIntyre. En månad senare försvann uppgifterna.

I ett av de mer omskrivna breven, daterat den 16 november 1999, skriver Jones till Mann, Bradley och Hughes, männen bakom Hockeyklubban:

Ive just completed Mikes Nature den engelska tidskriften Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years ie from 1981 onwards and from 1961 for Keiths to hide the decline min understrykning.

Här skriver Phil Jones alltså rakt ut att han lagt till data till de olika serierna för att dölja en temperaturminskning.

I ett annat brev från Tom Wigley till Keith Briffa finner vi föjande:

It is distressing to read that American Stinker item. But Keith does seem to have got himself into a mess. As I pointed out in emails, Yamal is insignificant. ……But, more generally, even if it *is* irrelevant how does Keith explain the McIntyre plot that compares Yamal-12 with Yamal-all? And how does he explain the apparent "selection" of the less well-replicated chronology rather that the later better replicated chronology?

Of course, I dont know how often Yamal-12 has really been used in recent, post-1995, work. I suspect from what you say it is much less often that M&M say - but where did they get their information? I presume they went thru papers to see if Yamal was cited, a pretty foolproof method if you ask me. Perhaps these things can be explained clearly and concisely - but I am not sure Keith is able to do this as he is too close to the issue and probably quite pissed of.

And the issue of with-holding data is still a hot potato, one that affects both you and Keith and Mann. Yes, there are reasons - but many *good* scientists appear to be unsympathetic to these. The trouble here is that with-holding data looks like hiding something, and hiding means in some eyes that it is bogus science that is being hidden.

Här säger Tom Wigley precis vad det handlar om, att undanhålla data från andra forskare och att det väcker misstankar om fusk.

I think Keith needs to be very, very careful in how he handles this. Id be willing to check over anything he puts together.

Här erbjuder sig Tom Wigley att hjälpa Briffa med mörkläggning men påpekar att att inte lämna ut data börjar bli en het potatis. Det är också intressant att notera att Wigley kallar American Thinker för "Stinker". Vidare framgår att han inte är bekymrad för att det vetenskapliga inte är korrekt och att Briffa kanske inte är kapabel att "bortförklara" sina manipulationer på engelska cherry-picking. Wigley menar att om man inte lämnar ut data kommer det att betraktas som att man vill gömma något och att det är dålig vetenskap man vill dölja.

I följande dokument från 2007 med titeln jones-foiathoughts.doc, diskuterar Jones taktik för att slippa att lämna ut data men om han måste, föreslår han hur de ska plocka bort vissa data.

"send them a subset removing station data from some of the countries" and "remove many of the early stations that we coded up in the 1980s." Or perhaps "send them the raw data as is, by reconstructing it from GHCN" Global Historical Climatology Network, adding that "this would be the raw data, but it would annoy them."

I ett brev från Phil Jones till Michael Mann står det:

Mike, Can you delete any emails you may have had with Keith re AR4? Keith will do likewise. He’s not in at the moment - minor family crisis. Can you also email Gene and get him to do the same? I don’t have his new email address. We will be getting Caspar to do likewise.

AR4 är den senaste IPCC-rapporten som kom ut 2007. I samband med begäran om information enligt FOIA skriver Phil Jones att de ska radera alla brev med anknytning till AR4 eftersom det av breven framgår att de manipulerat data. Det fanns tydligen fakta i dessa brev som inte tålde dagsljus.

I ett annat brev föreslår Phil Jones att de ska förfalska ett datum:

Gene/Caspar, Good to see these two out. Wahl/Ammann doesnt appear to be in CCs online first, but comes up if you search. You likely know that McIntyre will check this one to make sure it hasnt changed since the IPCC close-off date July 2006! Hard copies of the WG1 report from CUP have arrived here today. Ammann/Wahl - try and change the Received date! Dont give those skeptics something to amuse themselves with.

Kevin Trebert skriver:

“The fact is that we can’t account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can’t,"

Han beklagar sig över att de verkliga temperaturavläsningarna inte är tillräckligt varma och att detta är olyckligt.

Avslutningsvis några intressanta exempel på kommentarer i dataprogrammen:
I ett litet dataprogram använt av Jones och "The Team" fanns det en 15 000 rader lång kommentar från programmerarna, som håller på att analyseras och som handlar om CRU:s globala temperaturserie. Där står det att temperaturdata verkar vara suspekt, fabricerat och inte lämpat för sitt ändamål. Där finns bland annat citatet

“These will be artificially adjusted to look closer to the real temperatures."

I ett annat avsnitt står det:

"In subfolder “osborn-tree6mannoldprog" there’s a program Calibrate_mxd.pro that calibrates the MXD data against available local instrumental summer growing season temperatures between 1911 and 1990, then merges that data into a new file. That file is then digested and further modified by another program Pl_calibmxd1.pro which creates calibration statistics for the MXD against the stored temperature and “estimates" i.e. infills figures where such temperature readings were not available. The file created by that program is modified once again by Pl_Decline.pro, which “corrects it" - as described by the author - by “identifying and “artificially" the author’s own word removing “the decline." But oddly enough the series doesn’t begin its “decline adjustment" in 1960 - the supposed year of the enigmatic “divergence." In fact, all data between 1930 and 1994 are subject to “correction."’

I två andra program, briffa_Sep98_d.pro and briffa_Sep98_e.pro, är korrektionerna mycket grövre.
Programmeraren Briffa? skriver om ändringarna: ”Apply a VERY ARTIFICAL correction for decline!!" Sedan står det “Here is the fudge factor“ som faktiskt står inskrivet I programmet och som är "yrloc1400,findgen19*5.1904 ‘valadj0.,0.,0.,0.,0.,-0.1,-0.25,-0.3,0.,-0.1,0.3,0.8,1.2,1.7,2.5,2.6,2.6,2.6,2.6,2.6*0.75 ; fudge factor" Ingen sann eller hederlig forskare skulle skriva till en oförklarad manipulationsfaktor fudge factor vilket CRU:s programmerare faktiskt kallar ”manipulationsfaktor”, för att generera ett politiskt korrekt men vetenskapligt värdelöst resultat.

Ett annat exempel är:

‘“IMPORTANT NOTE: The data after 1960 should not be used. The tree-ring density records tend to show a decline after 1960 relative to the summer temperature in many high-latitude locations. In this data set this ‘decline’ has been artificially removed in an ad-hoc way, and this means that data after 1960 no longer represent tree-ring density variations, but have been modified to look more like the observed temperatures."

Andra, så som mxdgrid2ascii.pro, varnar:

‘“NOTE: recent decline in tree-ring density has been ARTIFICIALLY REMOVED to facilitate calibration. THEREFORE, post-1960 values will be much closer to observed temperatures then should be “than" they should be which will incorrectly imply the reconstruction is more skilful than it actually is. See Osborn et al. 2004.

Det finns också en stor kommentarfil av en programmerare vid CRU kallad Harry_read_me som dokumenterar att deras databehandling och modelleringsfunktioner var totalt bortom all kontroll. Han säger också: "They fudged so much that NOTHING that came out of CRU can have ANY believability".

Klimatskandalen har nu också spritt sig till Nya Zealand på södra halvklotet. En grupp forskare under ledning av Richard Treadgold, från Climate Conversion Group, har sammanställt temperaturdata för Nya Zealand och funnit att öarna inte stigit i temperatur de senaste 100 åren, trots detta visar de officiella forskarnas temperaturdiagram en stadig ökning.

De avslöjanden som gjorts i breven visar tydligt att allt underlag för IPCC:s påstående att temperaturen stigit ovanligt brant och bara kan förklaras av människans utsläpp av CO2, inte har med verkligheten att göra. I skrivande stund befinner sig många tusen politiker i Köpenhamn för att rädda klimatet genom att förhandla om utsläppsminskningar. Men vilken politiker lever som han lär? De har kommit till Köpenhamn i 160 privata flygplan och skjutsas runt i 1 200 limousiner. Trots att det nu avslöjats att det inte finns något vetenskapligt underlag som visar att CO2 påverkat klimatet fortsätter förhandlingarna i Köpenhamn som om ingenting har hänt. "Det är synd om människorna", sade Strindberg men vilka människor menade han? Klimatforskare eller klimatkonsumenter?

Är Climategate världens största vetenskapliga skandal? Döm själv.
