Since the beginning of this debate starting with the caricatures puplished in Jyllandsposten some time ago, Ive felt one of two things - swaying between them from one moment to the next; either Ive been repulsed by the anti-islamic nature of those drawings and perplexed with the inability of people around me to understand the anger they caused in a group of people already so marginalized...

...or Ive shared in the more common sentiment that the extreme reactions of muslims are caused by a lack of understanding for free press and democracy. Its a very complex issue, because as a secular citizen of a western democracy I cant help but feel that there is a need for open criticism of Islam...

and I do mean Islam as a whole, even though I recognize that moderate muslims are not at fault we should be able to say that Islam as a whole has a problem because of the very potent radicalization of recent years

.., but I also feel that the criticism that is given easily become chauvinistic and rarely gets to the point. It comes off very much the way this article describes it, more open ridicule and hatemongering then anything else. I think that there might be a lack of understanding among us westerners of how connected Islam is to a muslims way of life.

Muslims are not one people like jews are, but the religion is much more of a culture and a way of life then Christianity is. Attacking the religion becomes a much more personal thing then most westerners realize. But having said that, I cant really feel too bad about those pictures.

Because its clear to me that they are not intended as hatemongering. I strongly believe they are intended to make light of religion and people who believe in absolute truths, but specificly Islam in this case. There are plenty of jokes on Jesus Christ to be found.

In closing, I think that there is bound to be tention between muslims and people of western nations for quiet some time, and all we can do is try to have as much respect for one another as possible without compromizing our own beliefs. But the real solution is a conformation of Islam on the initiative of the muslims themselves.Moderate muslims living in the west will play a key part in this.

And non-islamic swedes should realize that and help that development along by engaging in dialogs like this one and accepting a moderate Islam as a part of swedish society.
