Svar 79: Jeb Bush var guvernör i Florida vid tillfället ifråga. Kanske en ren tilfällighet, men man vet ju aldrig. Enligt vissa källor gav han långtgående och specifika instruktioner till Katharine Harris, republikan, som då basade över valmaskineriet i Florida samtidigt som hon var GWBs kampanjledare i samma stat. Men det är förstås bara "konspriationsteorier"...

Svar 80: Lustigt, det har jag aldrig hört, har du någon källa till den uppgiften? Vad jag däremot har hört är att Fox News förklarade Bush som vinnare i Florida o därmed i presidentvalet innan alla röster var räknade. Detta efter ett beslut av chefen för Fox valbevakning, en viss John Ellis. Och vem är John Ellis? Jo, han är kusin till Jeb o George j:r. Men det är förstås bara ännu en "konspirationsteori"...

82/ Helt fel: The television news media called the state for Al Gore around 7:48pm EST, while voters in the western panhandle which is in the Central Time Zone of the state were still voting, potentially suppressing the heavily Republican panhandle vote. The media also announced polls were closed in Florida while polls in CST were open. A survey estimate by John McLaughlin & Associates put the number of voters who did not vote due to confusion as high as 15,000.

This region of the state traditionally voted mostly Republican. The McLaughlin survey estimates the media announcements of closed polls and a Gore victory cost Bush a margin of 5,000 votes. Some sources say that Bush would have won by a much larger victory margin and the controversy would have had been avoided if the networks had waited the call the state. Some even say that the projection may have caused some voters in other states to not vote, believing Gore elected.

At 7:49:40 p.m. ET, after reviewing VNS data, NBC was the first network to declare Gore had won Florida. The other networks followed within minutes. They were making those calls even before all the polls had closed in the state. Florida polling places shut down at 7 p.m. local time. But the city of Pensacola and several counties in the western Panhandle are in the Central time zone, meaning they did not finish voting until 8 p.m. ET.

A little more than two hours later, the television networks retracted their Florida calls. They did that because VNS had made a mistake in its vote count. It had shown Gore getting 98 of the votes in Duval County; in fact, he got about 41.

Over the next four hours, according to VNS data, Bush would appear to build a lead in the state. Shortly after 2 a.m., the networks gave him the state — and the election, because Floridas 25 electoral votes put him over the 270 needed to become president. But that decision was also wrong, or at least premature. A computer glitch had subtracted 16,000 votes from Gore and given them to Bush.

Over four hours later, at 2:16 a.m., Fox projected Bush as the Florida winner, as did all the other networks by 2:20 a.m."
