Heres by the way an interesting book which partly deals with the subject Ive already recommended it elsewhere here: Att ha eller at vara? To Have or To Be? by Erich Fromm. Its not only about fleeing/protecting us from reality, its about our distorted attitude towards it. And Fromm makes a nice point in that respect.
