I really like this quote by Khalil Gibran in his ‘Jesus the Son of Man’, where he has Jesus say to Mary Magdalen ‘Other men love themselves in your nearness. I love you in your self. Other men see a beauty in you that shall fade away sooner than their own years. But I see in you a beauty that shall not fade away, and in the autumn of your days that beauty shall not be afraid to gaze at itself in the mirror, and it shall not be offended.’

It may sound like a cliche to say that the inside is what really matters, but unless you’re only out to get short-term satisfaction I really think it does. ‘Garbage in, garbage out’ is what programmers say to describe that what you feed into a computer defines what you get out of it. Same for life. And I think it’s worth the effort to stop once in a while and think whether what I’m investing in my life is really what will bring me and others long-term happiness.
