Nice text! except for the Korea-part. Im hoping for Senegal... : . It made me think of a story by Antoine de Saint Exupéry in which he also described how war I think it was the Spanish Civil War awoke the selfless hero in and became the finest hour of an otherwise insignificant little accountant. Or the people I met in Africa, who notwithstanding their utter poverty were nevertheless shining examples of optimism, friendliness and hospitality.

On second thought I have to admit that I dont really like your understanding of respect. The way you describe it - correct me if Im wrong - it is very much performance-based. I.e. respect for people in wheelchairs because they show a stronger will than you or I do. Real respect according to me - and more pleasing to them, Im sure - would be to accept them as they are, with or without legs, strong will or no strong will, because of themselves, and not because theyre good at something.
