...and from then on put all their effort in trying to maintain a status quo of a dubious quality. They focus on appearances, on comfort in conformity rather than taking the effort of finding their own way. The superficial happiness of many borgerliga families is only one example. And since truth is quite good in making itself felt, they put all their effort in running away from it through plain ignorance, alcohol, affairs, mindless entertainment... you name it...

...rather than accepting that for all things valuable there is also a certain price to pay. On the other hand, I also think that looking only at the dark side and at how hypocritical society is - as you seem to do - also puts a stop to your personal development. Youve taken a great step by deciding not to share any more in their lies, but thats only the beginning. Happiness lies beyond, if thats what youre after.

Mind me, were companions in crime: I also often choose distance rather than commitment. Ive still got way to go and lots to learn. But its fun... Anyway, a great text, and extremely well written. Its always nice and healthy for an optimist like me to be reminded of the reality of less joyful views on life.
