About your question, I dont know if "lifetime employment" is an official policy at Toyota...
I believe that lifetime employment is going away, in general, in Japan.
But, Toyota, due to their success and growth, supposedly has not laid off anyone since 1950, when they had a major layoff. The NUMMI plant run by Toyota and GM in the US has never had a layoff in 20 years since Toyota took over.
