Assuming that you are indeed a determinist: the philosophical assumption that we are determined by our surroundings is only partly valid at an empirical level. Both psychology and brain science havent found any conclusive answers as to the nature of our consciousness and agency, and theres still a fierce debate on how much we can steer our actions and their consequences both on ourselves and our surroundings.
