Concerning your friend: she maybe did what many people do, i.e. quit bothering about making her own piece and take over ready-made solutions from others. Its less authentic, but also much easier and less frightening. Though Id like to add that hers is a somewhat weakened form of religiosity. She seems to use it as a way to flee from the world. Ideally however it should be a tool to help one face it.
